Wawulagala is a very beautiful and unique shaped mountain located near the famous Olu waterfall. When I go to Olu falls in 2013 I remember I have noticed this massive rock but at that time I didn’t have much interest in mountaineering as I was addicted to waterfall hunting.
However, in 2015-16, this place was discovered by Travel with Chathura program and I saw two trip reports from Ashan and Niroshan of their visit to this beautiful place. On 16th Oct 2016, I had to go to Kandy for important work and then I planned to visit Wawulagala as a solo hike. I came to Sea Forth road around 3 pm and proceed up to the Amanawela shrine. Then I turned to a sub road where the name board of a school established. I went up to the Wee Oya and turned to the right path which is parallel to the giant water pipes.
I went up to the small boutique and searched locals to get directions to the mountain. But unfortunately, I couldn’t find anyone and I couldn’t find any footpath from there. But later when I came with my office team that boutique was opened and I saw how the footpath was there.
After 6 months, I purpose to my office team to have an adventure tour with me. Then I guided them to the Wawulagala and then I was able to get the directions from the locals and were able to climb Wawulagala.
There are 2 main routes to Wawulagala,
- From Amanawala Side
- From Bulathkohupitiya, Kalupahana Estate side
Above 2nd route is the most convenient route for riders as there is only a 15-20 hike from the vehicle park over there. Wawulagala is also introduced as “Dombepala Mountain” and “Akkara 52 Mountain”. Please keep in mind that the top of the Wawulagala is a very risky area for lightening, as there are many pieces of evidence for the disasters happened from lightening.
